The Yunnan-Tibet Railway (滇藏铁路) is planned as a major railway corridor connecting Kunming in Yunnan with Lhasa in Tibet. As a result, it will provide a southern route into Tibet and complement the Qinghai–Tibet and Sichuan–Tibet railway corridors. The planned route broadly follows Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Bomi, Nyingchi, Lhasa. Several sections are already operating, while the most difficult section between Shangri-La and Bomi remains in the preliminary planning and survey stage.
At this stage, the Yunnan–Tibet Railway should not be considered a continuous passenger railway yet. As of August 2026, travelers can already use trains from Kunming to Shangri-La, while the railway connection from Shangri-La toward Tibet has not been completed.
Yunnan-Tibet Railway Route
The Yunnan–Tibet Railway is being developed in stages rather than as a single construction project.
The existing and planned corridor can be summarized as:
Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La → Bomi → Nyingchi → Lhasa
The eastern sections in Yunnan are already operational. The future railway through the Hengduan Mountains and southeastern Tibet represents the most challenging part of the project. The Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway, officially opened on November 26, 2023, is an important completed section of the planned Yunnan–Tibet corridor. It is 139 kilometers long, has a design speed of 140 km/h and is a national Class I single-track electrified railway.
Current Status of the Yunnan-Tibet Railway in 2026
1. Kunming-Dali: Operational
The Kunming–Dali railway corridor is already part of Yunnan’s operating railway network. It provides the main southern connection from Kunming toward western Yunnan.
2. Dali-Lijiang: Operational
The Dali-Lijiang Railway is also in operation, providing a direct rail connection between two of Yunnan’s most important tourism destinations. Together, the Kunming–Dali and Dali–Lijiang sections form the existing railway route toward northwestern Yunnan.
3. Lijiang-Shangri-La: Operational
The Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway opened on November 26, 2023, ending Diqing Prefecture’s history without railway service.
The 139.7-kilometer line crosses some of the most spectacular landscapes in northwestern Yunnan. It passes through the region around Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba Snow Mountain and Shangri-La. The railway has a bridge-and-tunnel ratio of about 73.4%, reflecting the difficult mountainous terrain. The National Railway Administration reported that the fastest journey from Kunming to Shangri-La is about 4 hours 30 minutes, while Lijiang to Shangri-La takes about 1 hour 18 minutes.
The railway also carries freight. Building materials, daily necessities and local agricultural products can use the railway, improving transportation conditions for the region.
The Most Difficult Section: Shangri-La to Bomi
The proposed Shangri-La–Bomi section is the critical missing link between northwestern Yunnan and southeastern Tibet. This section would cross the Hengduan Mountains and the Three Parallel Rivers region, an area characterized by deep river valleys, extremely steep mountains, active faults and complex geological conditions.
Unlike the completed railway sections in Yunnan, the Shangri-La to Bomi corridor remains at the preliminary planning and survey stage. Current national railway planning continues to call for advancing preliminary work on the Yunnan–Tibet Railway rather than treating the entire route as an approved construction project.
Therefore, claims that the entire Yunnan–Tibet Railway is already under construction or that a firm opening date has been established should be treated cautiously.
Bomi-Ranwu Railway
The Bomi-Ranwu Railway is a particularly important development because it forms part of the future railway network in southeastern Tibet and is also relevant to the broader Sichuan–Tibet and Yunnan–Tibet corridors. Unlike the still-preliminary Shangri-La to Bomi section, the Bomi-Ranwu project has received formal approval for construction.
The approved line runs from Bomi Station to Ranwu Station in Baxiu County, with a total length of 134.19 kilometers. It includes seven new stations, with five planned for initial operation, and has a bridge-and-tunnel ratio of 83.7%.
Public tender documents issued in 2026 show that construction-related work is actively progressing, including land-use, surveying and engineering services. This makes Bomi-Ranwu one of the more concrete steps toward expanding Tibet’s southeastern railway network.
Nyingchi-Lhasa: Already Operational
At the western end of the future corridor, the Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway, known as the Lalin Railway, has operated since June 2021. This line provides the existing railway connection between Nyingchi and Lhasa and is also an important component of the wider Sichuan–Tibet railway network. Once future railway projects in southeastern Tibet are completed, the Lhasa–Nyingchi section could provide the final connection toward Lhasa for trains arriving from the east and southeast.
Why Is the Yunnan-Tibet Railway So Difficult to Build?
The main challenge is geography. The railway would cross the Hengduan Mountains, one of the most rugged mountainous regions in Asia. Several major rivers run parallel to the route, including the Jinsha, Lancang and Nujiang rivers.
Extreme geological conditions
The region is located within a highly active tectonic environment. Earthquakes, landslides, rockfalls, debris flows and large-scale slope instability are major engineering concerns.
The Lijiang to Shangri-La Railway already demonstrated these difficulties. The Haba Snow Mountain Tunnel, for example, reaches about 9.5 kilometers in length and was affected by high ground stress, tectonic compression, faults and severe deformation of surrounding rock.
Deep valleys and high mountains
The railway must cross enormous differences in elevation over relatively short distances. This makes conventional railway construction difficult. Long tunnels, high bridges and complex railway alignments are required to maintain acceptable gradients.
Environmental sensitivity
The route passes through areas associated with the Three Parallel Rivers region, one of China’s most environmentally important mountainous areas. The region contains extensive forests, alpine ecosystems and habitats for rare wildlife. Railway construction therefore faces strict environmental requirements and must minimize impacts on protected areas, rivers and wildlife habitats.
Difficult logistics
Some proposed railway sections are far from major cities and industrial centers. Construction materials, heavy equipment, fuel and workers must be transported through mountainous terrain. The limited construction season and difficult road conditions further increase costs and construction time.
How the Yunnan-Tibet Railway Could Change Tourism
One of the biggest potential benefits is tourism. A future railway corridor could connect some of southwest China’s most famous destinations in a single travel route:
Lijiang → Shangri-La → Meili Snow Mountain → Bomi → Ranwu Lake → Nyingchi → Lhasa
This would create an extraordinary high-altitude tourism corridor combining Yunnan’s cultural landscapes with the mountains, forests and lakes of southeastern Tibet. Travelers could potentially combine Lijiang Old Town, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain, Ranwu Lake, Bomi, Nyingchi and Lhasa in one extended railway-and-road journey.
The existing Lijiang to Shangri-La Railway has already demonstrated the tourism potential of improved rail access. The railway connects major attractions including Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba Snow Mountain and Shangri-La, while reducing travel times between major destinations.
Economic and Logistics Benefits
The Yunnan-Tibet Railway could also provide an alternative freight corridor between Tibet and southwest China.
A completed railway connection could make it easier to transport:
- Agricultural and pastoral products from Tibet
- Tibetan medicines and specialty products
- Mineral and other industrial products
- Machinery and construction equipment
- Agricultural supplies
- Consumer goods and building materials
For southeastern Tibet, improved rail access could reduce dependence on long-distance road transportation and strengthen regional logistics. The railway could also complement existing Qinghai-Tibet and Sichuan-Tibet railway corridors, creating a more diversified transportation network for Tibet.

When Will the Yunnan-Tibet Railway Be Completed?
There is no officially confirmed full-line opening date for a continuous Kunming–Lhasa railway. The biggest uncertainty remains the Shangri-La–Bomi section. Until this section receives the necessary feasibility approvals and enters full construction, predictions of a specific date for the complete Kunming–Lhasa railway should be treated as tentative.
A full connection in the mid-2030s is sometimes discussed as a possible long-term scenario, but it should not be presented as an official opening date. For travelers in 2026, the practical option is to take trains from Kunming through Dali and Lijiang to Shangri-La, then continue toward Tibet by road or other available transportation. The railway connection from Shangri-La to Tibet is not yet available.
The Future of the Yunnan-Tibet Railway
The Yunnan–Tibet Railway is potentially one of the most spectacular railway corridors in China. Its significance extends beyond simply connecting Kunming and Lhasa. It could create a new southern gateway to Tibet, improve logistics, expand tourism and strengthen transportation links between Yunnan and southeastern Tibet.
At the same time, the railway faces enormous challenges. The Hengduan Mountains, Three Parallel Rivers region, active geological conditions and environmental sensitivity make the missing sections among the most difficult railway projects in China. For now, the most important development is the gradual expansion of the railway network around Bomi, Ranwu and Nyingchi, while the Shangri-La–Bomi corridor remains the key missing link.
For travelers, the railway is best viewed as a long-term project rather than a currently available Kunming–Lhasa train route. Construction schedules, approvals and opening dates can change, so future travel plans should always be checked against official announcements from China’s railway authorities.
