Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway: The Scenic Train Route Through Tibet

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway is one of the most important railway projects in Tibet. Opened on June 25, 2021, it became Tibet’s first electrified railway and brought high-altitude Fuxing passenger trains to southeastern Tibet. The railway runs for 435.48 kilometers from Lhasa through Shannan to Nyingchi. It has a design speed of 160 km/h. More than 90% of the line is located above 3,000 meters in elevation, and the route crosses the Yarlung Tsangpo River 16 times. Bridges and tunnels account for about 75% of the railway.

Today, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway is more than a passenger route. Moreover, it has become a transportation corridor for tourism, freight, regional development and economic integration in southern and southeastern Tibet.

Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway Route

The railway begins at Lhasa and travels eastward through Shannan before reaching Nyingchi.

The main route passes through:

Lhasa – Qüxü – Zhanang – Shannan – Sangri – Gyaca – Nang County – Mainling – Nyingchi

The railway follows the valleys of southern Tibet and crosses some of the region’s most dramatic landscapes. It passes between the Gangdese Mountains and the Himalayas and crosses the Yarlung Tsangpo River numerous times. The railway was designed as a national Class I single-track electrified railway with a design speed of 160 km/h. When it opened, nine stations initially handled passenger and freight services.

Lhasa to Nyingchi Train Travel

As a result, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway dramatically shortened travel time between central Tibet and southeastern Tibet. When the railway opened, the fastest journey from Lhasa to Nyingchi was about 3 hours 29 minutes, while Lhasa–Shannan services could take as little as 1 hour 10 minutes.

Current services and schedules can vary, so travelers should check the latest train timetable before booking. The railway operates high-altitude Fuxing passenger trains designed specifically for the demanding Tibetan environment. Before the railway opened, traveling from Lhasa to Nyingchi by road generally took around 7–8 hours. The railway therefore made Nyingchi much more accessible for both residents and tourists.

Five Years of Operation: 2026 Update

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway reached its fifth anniversary in June 2026. During its first five years, it transported more than 6.25 million passengers and more than 2 million tonnes of freight. These figures demonstrate how quickly the railway has become an important part of Tibet’s transportation system.

The railway also provides a stable freight corridor between Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi. Moreover, its cargo services have expanded beyond construction materials and agricultural supplies to include specialty agricultural and pastoral products. This two-way flow of goods is increasingly important for the regional economy.

How the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway Supports the Economy

Lower Logistics Costs

Before the railway opened, road transportation was the main way to move goods between Lhasa and southeastern Tibet.

The railway now provides a more efficient option for transporting large quantities of:

  • Construction materials
  • Fertilizers and agricultural supplies
  • Grain and daily necessities
  • Machinery and equipment
  • Agricultural products
  • Local specialty goods

At the same time, products from southeastern Tibet can be transported toward Lhasa and larger markets. This is particularly important for products that face transportation challenges in mountainous regions. Improved rail access can help local producers reach wider markets while making supplies more reliable.

The railway transported more than 2 million tonnes of freight during its first five years, showing that its role extends well beyond passenger transportation.

Building a Lhasa-Shannan-Nyingchi Economic Corridor

The railway has also strengthened connections between Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi. Faster transportation makes it easier for people to travel between the three areas for work, education, medical care, business and tourism. Local government reports describe the railway as helping to create a three-hour economic circle linking Lhasa, Shannan and Nyingchi. New tourism, commercial and logistics activities are developing along the route.

Railway stations can also stimulate surrounding development by creating demand for:

  • Hotels and restaurants
  • Warehousing
  • Transportation services
  • Retail businesses
  • Tourism services
  • Agricultural distribution

This can create additional employment opportunities for communities along the railway.

Tourism Impact of the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway

Tourism is one of the most visible benefits of the railway.

The route connects visitors with some of the most attractive destinations in southern and southeastern Tibet, including:

  • Shannan
  • Samye Monastery
  • Yungbulakang Palace
  • Nyingchi
  • Basum Tso
  • Mount Namcha Barwa
  • Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon
  • Nyingchi Peach Blossom Valley

The railway does not reach every attraction directly. However, it provides a convenient main transport corridor before travelers continue by road. This combination of train and road travel is particularly useful for visitors who want to explore southeastern Tibet without spending the entire journey on mountain roads.

Nyingchi Peach Blossom Tourism

The Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival has become one of Tibet’s most popular seasonal tourism events. Every spring, visitors travel to Nyingchi to see wild peach blossoms against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, forests and river valleys.

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway has made this seasonal tourism more accessible. During major tourism periods, railway operators can arrange additional or specially themed services to meet demand. In 2026, the railway was again incorporated into tourism products associated with the Nyingchi peach blossom season. The railway has also encouraged new tourism products. In 2026, the “Beautiful Heavenly Road” tourism train was used to promote travel between Lhasa and Nyingchi, showing how the railway is evolving from simple transportation into a tourism experience in its own right.

Benefits for Local Communities

Improved railway access can also create opportunities for villages and small businesses.

Tourists arriving by train often continue their journey by local vehicle, creating demand for:

  • Village home stays
  • Restaurants
  • Local guides
  • Transportation
  • Handicrafts
  • Agricultural products
  • Cultural experiences

This can help communities convert local natural and cultural resources into tourism income. The development of tourism around Nyingchi’s peach blossom season is a good example of how improved transportation can connect rural communities with a larger visitor market. However, tourism growth also needs to be managed carefully. Southeastern Tibet contains fragile ecosystems, and tourism development must remain compatible with environmental protection.

Future Development of the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway

The next major development is the planned Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway capacity expansion project. The project has already entered preparatory work. In 2025, China State Railway Group approved the relevant railway development plan, and tenders were issued for geological survey supervision and other preliminary services.

The planned project would add a second main track to the existing railway. Public project information gives the new double-track section a length of approximately 440.9 kilometers, with a bridge-and-tunnel ratio of about 79.4%. The upgraded corridor would continue from Lhasa to Nyingchi and connect with the Ya’an-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway.

As of 2026, local government planning documents continue to list the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway capacity expansion as an important infrastructure project, but travelers should not treat an exact construction or completion date as confirmed unless announced by the railway authorities.

Connection with the Sichuan-Tibet Railway

The future importance of the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway is closely connected to the Sichuan-Tibet Railway. The Lhasa-Nyingchi section is already an operating part of the broader corridor. When the difficult Ya’an-Nyingchi section is completed, trains from Chengdu and western Sichuan could travel through Nyingchi and continue westward to Lhasa.

The future route would broadly follow:

Chengdu – Ya’an – Kangding – Nyingchi – Shannan – Lhasa

This would create a new railway connection between Tibet and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic region. It would also reduce Tibet’s dependence on a single eastern railway approach and create additional capacity for passengers and freight.

Connection with the Yunnan-Tibet Railway

The Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway is also important to the long-term Yunnan-Tibet Railway network. Future railway development through Shangri-La, Bomi, Ranwu and Nyingchi could eventually connect Yunnan with the existing Lhasa–Nyingchi railway corridor.

This would create a potential southern railway route:

Kunming – Dali – Lijiang – Shangri-La – Bomi – Nyingchi – Lhasa

However, major sections of this proposed corridor remain under planning and preliminary development. Therefore, a continuous Kunming–Lhasa railway is not currently available.

Where Does the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway Fit into Tibet’s Railway Network?

The Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway occupies an important position in Tibet’s developing railway network.

From Lhasa, it connects with:

  • Qinghai-Tibet Railway toward Qinghai and mainland China
  • Lhasa-Shigatse Railway toward western Tibet
  • Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway toward southeastern Tibet

From Nyingchi, it provides the operating railway connection toward the future Sichuan-Tibet and Yunnan-Tibet corridors. Official descriptions of the railway emphasize that it connects with the existing Lhasa-Shigatse and Qinghai-Tibet railways and forms an important common section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway and planned Yunnan-Tibet Railway. This makes the line strategically important to the long-term expansion of Tibet’s railway network.

Current Limitations

Despite its importance, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway does not provide direct rail access to every destination in southeastern Tibet. Places such as Medog, Zayu, Bomi and remote Himalayan valleys still require road transportation. For tourists, the railway should therefore be viewed as the main trunk route, with road transfers completing the journey to more remote attractions. There is also an important economic limitation. Railway infrastructure alone cannot guarantee rapid regional economic growth. Population density, local industries, tourism demand, investment and environmental regulations all influence the final economic benefits.

The Future of the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway has already changed transportation in southern and southeastern Tibet. In just five years, it carried more than 6.25 million passengers and over 2 million tonnes of freight.

Its impact can be seen in three major areas: transportation, tourism and regional development.

  • Travelers, it offers a comfortable and efficient way to travel from Lhasa to Shannan and Nyingchi.
  • Local communities, it provides better access to markets, supplies and tourism opportunities.
  • Tibet’s wider transportation network, it serves as an important link between existing railways and future Sichuan–Tibet and Yunnan–Tibet railway corridors.

The planned capacity expansion will be particularly important. Adding a second track would increase the corridor’s ability to handle future passenger and freight demand and help prepare it for integration with the wider Sichuan–Tibet Railway network. For anyone planning a Tibet trip, the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway is already one of the best ways to experience southeastern Tibet. As the region’s railway network continues to expand, its role is likely to become even more important.

Note: Railway construction schedules, train frequencies and future opening dates can change. Travelers should check the latest official railway announcements before making travel arrangements.
