Xining Lhasa Train Tour Overview

The 10 Days Xining Lhasa Everest Base Camp Train Tour combines two of the most remarkable experiences in western China and Tibet: a scenic journey aboard the Qinghai–Tibet Railway and an overland adventure to the north face of Mount Everest. Beginning in Xining, the gateway to the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, the journey crosses the vast Tibetan Plateau by train before arriving in Lhasa, the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet. Along the railway, travelers can watch the landscape transform from Qinghai’s highland scenery into immense grasslands, snow-covered mountains, alpine lakes and remote wilderness. The Xining–Lhasa section is one of the shortest direct train journeys to Tibet and covers about 1,956 km.

After reaching Lhasa, the tour continues by private vehicle along one of Tibet’s classic overland routes. Explore Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street and ancient Buddhist monasteries, then travel across high mountain passes to the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, historic Gyantse and Shigatse. The ultimate highlight is the journey to Everest Base Camp, where the enormous north face of Mount Everest dominates the Himalayan skyline. After experiencing Everest, return to Shigatse and Lhasa, completing a journey that brings together Tibet’s sacred culture, high-altitude landscapes, historic monasteries and the world’s highest mountain.

What to Expect

The first major highlight is the Xining–Lhasa train journey, which takes travelers deep into the Tibetan Plateau. After leaving Xining, the railway gradually enters a dramatic high-altitude landscape. The most spectacular scenery appears after Golmud, including the Kunlun Mountains, vast grasslands, snow-covered peaks, high-altitude lakes and the remote wilderness of the plateau. The railway crosses some of the highest terrain served by a passenger railway, with the line reaching more than 5,000 meters around Tanggula Pass. Current published schedules show the direct journey taking roughly 20–22 hours.

The second half of the journey is an overland expedition through central Tibet and toward Mount Everest. Expect long driving days, high mountain passes, changing weather and basic facilities in remote areas. The route combines important Tibetan Buddhist sites with spectacular Himalayan scenery, including Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse and Rongbuk. At Everest Base Camp, the altitude is around 5,000–5,200 meters, so travelers should be prepared for cold temperatures, strong sunlight and thinner air.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Xining

Altitude: Approx. 2,200 m, Accommodation: Xining

Welcome to Xining, the starting point of your Tibet train adventure.

Upon arrival at Xining Airport or Railway Station, your local guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, the remainder of the day is free for rest and independent exploration.

Xining is an interesting cultural crossroads where Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian and Han Chinese influences meet. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore the city center, local markets or nearby cultural attractions.

For travelers arriving early, Ta’er Monastery (Kumbum Monastery) is an excellent optional visit. The monastery is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist institutions in Qinghai and is known for its religious artwork, murals and traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Overnight: Xining

Day 2 Xining Sightseeing and Prepare for the Tibet Train

Altitude: Approx. 2,200 m, Accommodation: Xining

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed sightseeing tour of Xining before your journey to Tibet.

A possible visit is Ta’er Monastery, an important Gelugpa Buddhist monastery and one of Qinghai’s best-known cultural landmarks. Explore its temples, courtyards and traditional Buddhist artwork while learning about the relationship between Tibetan Buddhism and the surrounding region.

You may also visit a local museum or explore Xining’s old neighborhoods and Muslim Quarter, where different cultural traditions have shaped the city for centuries.

In the afternoon, prepare for your train journey. Your guide will confirm the train departure information and assist with the necessary arrangements.

Pack a small overnight bag for the train with essentials such as warm clothing, toiletries, snacks, water and electronic chargers.

Overnight: Xining

Day 3Xining to Lhasa by Tibet Train

Distance: 1,956 km, Train journey: 20–22 hours, Overnight train

Today begins one of the highlights of your Tibet journey: the Xining–Lhasa train ride.

Transfer to Xining Railway Station and board your direct train to Lhasa. The train gradually leaves the lower-elevation landscapes around Xining and heads toward the immense Tibetan Plateau.

As the train travels westward, watch the scenery change dramatically. Mountains, desert landscapes, alpine lakes, grasslands and grazing yaks appear outside the window.

After Golmud, the railway enters the most spectacular section of the journey. Highlights may include the Kunlun Mountains, Kekexili region, Tuotuo River, Tanggula Mountains and vast Qiangtang grasslands.

The train is specially designed for high-altitude travel and is equipped with an oxygen supply system. Meals are available onboard, while travelers often bring additional snacks and drinks.

Spend the night in your sleeper berth as the train continues toward Lhasa.

Overnight: Tibet train

Day 4Arrive in Lhasa and Acclimatization

Altitude: Approx. 3,650 m, Accommodation: Lhasa, Overnight: Lhasa

Wake up surrounded by the high-altitude scenery of the Tibetan Plateau as the train approaches Lhasa.

After arriving at Lhasa Railway Station, your Tibetan guide and driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Today is intentionally kept light because Lhasa sits at approximately 3,650 meters above sea level. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.

Rest at the hotel and drink plenty of water. If you feel comfortable, take a short and slow walk around the surrounding area. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol on your first day in Lhasa.

Day 5Lhasa Sightseeing – Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple

Altitude: Approx. 3,650 m, Accommodation: Lhasa, Overnight: Lhasa

Begin your exploration of Lhasa with the magnificent Potala Palace. Rising dramatically above the city, Potala Palace is one of Tibet’s most recognizable landmarks. The former winter palace contains chapels, murals, religious statues, historical objects and sacred stupas. Because entrance arrangements can be time-controlled, your guide will coordinate the visit according to the confirmed ticket schedule.

In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most sacred religious sites in Tibet. Afterward, walk around Barkhor Street, the traditional pilgrimage circuit surrounding Jokhang Temple. You will see pilgrims walking clockwise around the temple, spinning prayer wheels and engaging in devotional practices.

The combination of Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor provides a powerful introduction to Tibet’s religious heritage.

Day 6Lhasa – Yamdrok Lake – Gyantse – Shigatse

Distance: 380 km, Driving time: Approx. 7–9 hours with sightseeing
Altitude: 3,800 m, Overnight: Shigatse

Leave Lhasa in the morning and begin your overland journey toward Shigatse. The road climbs toward Gampa La Pass, reaching approximately 4,800 meters. From the viewpoint, enjoy a spectacular panorama of Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s most famous sacred lakes. The lake’s turquoise waters stretch between rugged mountains and highland valleys, creating one of the most memorable landscapes of the journey.

Continue toward Gyantse, a historic town with an important place in Tibetan history. Visit Pelkor Chode Monastery and the renowned Kumbum Stupa, a multi-level Buddhist monument famous for its chapels and religious artwork. Continue to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and an important center of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Check into your hotel and relax after the long drive.

Day 7Shigatse to Everest Base Camp

Distance: Approx. 390 km, Driving time: Approx. 8–10 hours
Altitude: EBC  5,200 m, Accommodation: Everest Base Camp tent

Today is the most anticipated day of the journey: Everest Base Camp. Leave Shigatse and travel west through the dramatic landscapes of southern Tibet. The road passes high mountain valleys, remote settlements and expansive plateau scenery.

As you approach the Everest region, the Himalayan peaks become increasingly prominent. Continue toward Tingri before entering the road leading toward Rongbuk Valley.

Eventually, the north face of Mount Everest comes into view. Arrive at the Everest Base Camp area, where the world’s highest mountain rises dramatically above the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

Spend time exploring the designated viewpoint and surrounding area. If weather conditions are favorable, you may witness an unforgettable Himalayan sunset. The accommodation near Everest is considerably more basic than in Lhasa or Shigatse. Temperatures can fall sharply after sunset, so warm clothing is essential.

Day 8Everest Base Camp – Shigatse

Distance: 390 km, Driving time: Approx. 8–10 hours, Overnight: Shigatse

Wake early for a possible sunrise view of Mount Everest. Clear weather can reveal spectacular golden light across the Himalayan peaks, making the early morning one of the best photography opportunities of the entire trip.

After breakfast, begin the return journey toward Shigatse. The route passes through the remote Tibetan landscape once again, providing opportunities to stop at viewpoints, villages and scenic locations along the way.

After the long drive, arrive in Shigatse and check into your hotel. If time and energy allow, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of Tibet’s most important monasteries and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Explore its impressive courtyards, chapels and religious monuments before returning to your hotel.

Day 9Shigatse to Lhasa

Distance: Approx. 28 km Driving time: Approx. 5 hours, Accommodation: Lhasa

After breakfast, begin your return journey to Lhasa. Travel through the highland landscape toward central Tibet, with opportunities to enjoy mountain views, river valleys and traditional Tibetan settlements.

Arrive in Lhasa in the afternoon. After checking into your hotel, the evening is free to relax or explore the old city at your own pace. You can return to Barkhor Street, browse for traditional handicrafts or enjoy a final Tibetan meal with your guide and fellow travelers.
