The 10 Days Xining Lhasa Everest Base Camp Train Tour combines two of the most remarkable experiences in western China and Tibet: a scenic journey aboard the Qinghai–Tibet Railway and an overland adventure to the north face of Mount Everest. Beginning in Xining, the gateway to the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, the journey crosses the vast Tibetan Plateau by train before arriving in Lhasa, the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet. Along the railway, travelers can watch the landscape transform from Qinghai’s highland scenery into immense grasslands, snow-covered mountains, alpine lakes and remote wilderness. The Xining–Lhasa section is one of the shortest direct train journeys to Tibet and covers about 1,956 km.
After reaching Lhasa, the tour continues by private vehicle along one of Tibet’s classic overland routes. Explore Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street and ancient Buddhist monasteries, then travel across high mountain passes to the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake, historic Gyantse and Shigatse. The ultimate highlight is the journey to Everest Base Camp, where the enormous north face of Mount Everest dominates the Himalayan skyline. After experiencing Everest, return to Shigatse and Lhasa, completing a journey that brings together Tibet’s sacred culture, high-altitude landscapes, historic monasteries and the world’s highest mountain.
The first major highlight is the Xining–Lhasa train journey, which takes travelers deep into the Tibetan Plateau. After leaving Xining, the railway gradually enters a dramatic high-altitude landscape. The most spectacular scenery appears after Golmud, including the Kunlun Mountains, vast grasslands, snow-covered peaks, high-altitude lakes and the remote wilderness of the plateau. The railway crosses some of the highest terrain served by a passenger railway, with the line reaching more than 5,000 meters around Tanggula Pass. Current published schedules show the direct journey taking roughly 20–22 hours.
The second half of the journey is an overland expedition through central Tibet and toward Mount Everest. Expect long driving days, high mountain passes, changing weather and basic facilities in remote areas. The route combines important Tibetan Buddhist sites with spectacular Himalayan scenery, including Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse and Rongbuk. At Everest Base Camp, the altitude is around 5,000–5,200 meters, so travelers should be prepared for cold temperatures, strong sunlight and thinner air.

Wake up surrounded by the high-altitude scenery of the Tibetan Plateau as the train approaches Lhasa.
After arriving at Lhasa Railway Station, your Tibetan guide and driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Today is intentionally kept light because Lhasa sits at approximately 3,650 meters above sea level. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.
Rest at the hotel and drink plenty of water. If you feel comfortable, take a short and slow walk around the surrounding area. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol on your first day in Lhasa.

Begin your exploration of Lhasa with the magnificent Potala Palace. Rising dramatically above the city, Potala Palace is one of Tibet’s most recognizable landmarks. The former winter palace contains chapels, murals, religious statues, historical objects and sacred stupas. Because entrance arrangements can be time-controlled, your guide will coordinate the visit according to the confirmed ticket schedule.
In the afternoon, visit Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most sacred religious sites in Tibet. Afterward, walk around Barkhor Street, the traditional pilgrimage circuit surrounding Jokhang Temple. You will see pilgrims walking clockwise around the temple, spinning prayer wheels and engaging in devotional practices.
The combination of Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor provides a powerful introduction to Tibet’s religious heritage.

The lake’s turquoise waters stretch between rugged mountains and highland valleys, creating one of the most memorable landscapes of the journey.
Continue toward Gyantse, a historic town with an important place in Tibetan history. Visit Pelkor Chode Monastery and the renowned Kumbum Stupa, a multi-level Buddhist monument famous for its chapels and religious artwork. Continue to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and an important center of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Check into your hotel and relax after the long drive.

As you approach the Everest region, the Himalayan peaks become increasingly prominent. Continue toward Tingri before entering the road leading toward Rongbuk Valley.
Eventually, the north face of Mount Everest comes into view. Arrive at the Everest Base Camp area, where the world’s highest mountain rises dramatically above the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
Spend time exploring the designated viewpoint and surrounding area. If weather conditions are favorable, you may witness an unforgettable Himalayan sunset. The accommodation near Everest is considerably more basic than in Lhasa or Shigatse. Temperatures can fall sharply after sunset, so warm clothing is essential.

After the long drive, arrive in Shigatse and check into your hotel. If time and energy allow, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of Tibet’s most important monasteries and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Explore its impressive courtyards, chapels and religious monuments before returning to your hotel.
