The 10 Days Shangri-La–Ranwu–Bomi–Nyingchi–Lhasa Overland Tour is a spectacular journey from Yunnan’s legendary Shangri-La to the spiritual heart of Tibet. Following the Yunnan–Tibet Highway, the route winds through snow-capped mountains, deep river valleys, alpine lakes, glaciers, and lush forests. Highlights include Meili Snow Mountain, Nujiang River Valley, Ranwu Lake, Midui Glacier, Bomi, Lulang Forest, and Mount Namcha Barwa.
More than a scenic road trip, this adventure combines Tibetan culture, Buddhist heritage, traditional villages, and dramatic Himalayan landscapes. After crossing high mountain passes and following historic Tea-Horse Road routes, the journey ends in Lhasa, where you explore the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery—a memorable introduction to the natural and spiritual wonders of Tibet.
This is a journey of constantly changing landscapes. You begin among the forests, valleys, and snow mountains of Yunnan before crossing into Tibet and entering a world of enormous river gorges, high mountain passes, glaciers, alpine lakes, and vast Himalayan valleys. One of the highlights is the spectacular view of Meili Snow Mountain, particularly the sacred peak Kawagebo, followed by the dramatic mountain roads around Mangkang and the Nujiang River. As the road continues eastward into Tibet, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with Ranwu Lake, Midui Glacier, Bomi’s forests, Lulang’s alpine meadows, and the mountain ranges surrounding Nyingchi.
The cultural experience is equally important. The route follows sections of the historic Tea-Horse Road, an ancient network that connected Tibetan areas with Yunnan and neighboring regions. You will encounter Tibetan villages, monasteries, prayer flags, mani stones, traditional architecture, and local communities while traveling between destinations. By the time you reach Lhasa, the journey shifts from remote mountain landscapes to Tibet’s most important cultural and religious landmarks. The final days allow you to explore Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery.
Altitude: approximately 3,300 m
Arrive in Shangri-La, formerly known as Zhongdian, in northwestern Yunnan. Your guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, take the rest of the day to relax and become familiar with the altitude.
If you feel comfortable, you can take a gentle walk around Shangri-La Old Town and see its traditional Tibetan-style buildings, narrow lanes, shops, and local restaurants. Depending on your arrival time and energy level, you may also visit Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Yunnan.
Avoid strenuous activity on your first day and drink plenty of water.
Overnight: Shangri-La
Altitude: approximately 3,500 m
After breakfast, begin your overland journey toward Deqin. The road climbs through spectacular mountain scenery, with views of alpine valleys, Tibetan villages, grasslands, and snow-covered peaks.
Along the way, stop near Napa Lake for photographs and continue toward Deqin. The landscape becomes increasingly mountainous as you approach the Hengduan Mountain range.
In the afternoon, arrive at the Feilai Temple viewpoint, one of the best-known locations for viewing Meili Snow Mountain. If weather conditions are favorable, sunset can create spectacular colors across the snow-covered peaks.
Meili Snow Mountain is considered sacred in Tibetan Buddhism, and Kawagebo Peak is regarded as one of the most revered mountains in the region.
Overnight: Feilai Temple / Deqin area
Altitude: approximately 3,300–3,800 m
If weather permits, wake early for a sunrise view of Meili Snow Mountain before breakfast. Afterward, continue toward the Tibet border and enter the spectacular landscapes of eastern Tibet.
The road follows deep river valleys and climbs through rugged mountain terrain. This region forms part of the historic Tea-Horse Road, once used by traders, pilgrims, and caravans traveling between Yunnan and Tibet.
Continue through the Mangkang area before reaching Zogang, a high-altitude Tibetan town surrounded by mountains and valleys. This is an important transition point as the journey moves deeper into Tibet.
The driving conditions can be demanding, so the schedule remains flexible according to road and weather conditions.
Overnight: Zogang
Altitude: approximately 3,850 m
Today is one of the most scenic driving days of the tour. Continue toward Ranwu Lake, traveling through dramatic valleys and mountainous terrain.
As you approach the Parlung Tsangpo valley, the landscape changes dramatically. Snow-covered mountains rise above deep river valleys, while waterfalls, forests, rocky cliffs, and traditional Tibetan settlements appear along the road.
Arrive at Ranwu Lake (Rawok Tso), one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in eastern Tibet. Fed by glaciers and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the lake is known for its clear blue-green water and peaceful atmosphere.
Spend time beside the lake taking photographs and enjoying the scenery.
Overnight: Ranwu Lake area
Altitude: approximately 2,750 m in Bomi
After breakfast, continue exploring the Ranwu region before traveling toward Midui Glacier.
Midui Glacier is one of the most remarkable glaciers in southeastern Tibet. Its combination of ice, forests, mountains, and Tibetan villages creates an unusual landscape that differs from the barren high-altitude scenery found in many other parts of Tibet.
Depending on local conditions, take a short walk in the scenic area to enjoy views of the glacier and surrounding mountains. The pace can be adjusted according to weather and group fitness.
Continue onward to Bomi, a beautiful forested valley surrounded by snow-covered mountains. Compared with the high plateau landscapes farther west, Bomi is noticeably greener and more humid, making it one of the most visually distinctive destinations on the route.
Overnight: Bomi
Altitude: approximately 2,900–3,000 m
Today, travel through one of the most beautiful sections of southeastern Tibet.
The road from Bomi toward Nyingchi passes through lush forests, mountain valleys, rivers, and Tibetan settlements. Continue toward Lulang Forest, often described as one of the most beautiful forest landscapes in Tibet.
Lulang is particularly attractive during the warmer months when the alpine meadows are green and surrounded by forests and snow-covered mountains.
Continue across Sejila Pass, one of the major high passes along the route. On clear days, there may be opportunities to see Mount Namcha Barwa, one of the most spectacular peaks in southeastern Tibet.
Continue to Nyingchi, also known as Bayi, a relatively low-altitude and green region surrounded by mountains.
Overnight: Nyingchi
Altitude: approximately 3,650 m in Lhasa
After breakfast, begin the journey west toward Lhasa.
Depending on the final itinerary and road conditions, a visit to Basumtso Lake (Basong Tso/Draksum Tso) can be included. Surrounded by forests and snow-capped mountains, this beautiful alpine lake is known for its turquoise water and peaceful setting. The lake area also contains important Tibetan Buddhist cultural sites.
Continue west along the Niyang River valley toward the Tibetan capital. As you approach Lhasa, the landscape gradually becomes more open and distinctly plateau-like.
Arrive in Lhasa, check into your hotel, and spend the evening resting after the long journey.
Overnight: Lhasa
Altitude: approximately 3,650 m
Today begins your exploration of the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet.
Start with a visit to the magnificent Potala Palace, one of Tibet’s most recognizable landmarks. Built on Marpo Ri Hill, the palace dominates the Lhasa skyline and contains numerous chapels, prayer halls, statues, murals, scriptures, and religious treasures.
Continue to Jokhang Temple, regarded as one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Tibet. The temple is an important pilgrimage destination, and you can observe pilgrims performing traditional devotional practices around the temple.
In the afternoon, explore Barkhor Street, the historic area surrounding Jokhang Temple. Walk along the traditional pilgrimage circuit, browse Tibetan handicrafts and local products, and experience the lively atmosphere of Lhasa’s old city.
Overnight: Lhasa
After breakfast, continue exploring Lhasa’s Buddhist heritage.
Visit Drepung Monastery, historically one of the largest and most influential monasteries in Tibet. The monastery sits on the slopes outside central Lhasa and offers impressive views of the surrounding valley.
Continue to Sera Monastery, another major Gelugpa monastery and one of the best places to experience traditional Tibetan Buddhist philosophical debate. If the debate session is operating during your visit, you can watch monks engage in animated discussions in the monastery courtyard.
The remainder of the day can be spent exploring Lhasa independently. Enjoy a traditional Tibetan meal, visit local shops, relax in a teahouse, or return to Barkhor Street for more photography and cultural experiences.
Overnight: Lhasa
After breakfast, your 10-day Shangri-La to Lhasa overland adventure comes to an end.
Your guide and driver will transfer you to Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa railway station according to your onward travel arrangements.
If your departure is later in the day, additional free time in Lhasa may be possible depending on your flight or train schedule.
Tour ends in Lhasa.
The Shangri-La to Lhasa overland journey is ideal for travelers who want to experience Tibet through its landscapes rather than simply fly into Lhasa. Instead of beginning immediately at high altitude, the route gradually takes you from Yunnan’s mountain valleys into eastern Tibet before reaching the Tibetan capital.
