What to Expect

Prepare for the ultimate Tibet adventure — a 14-day journey that takes you from the lush, green valleys of eastern Tibet to the stark, sacred landscapes of the far west. This Nyingchi, Everest and Kailash private tour is the most comprehensive Tibet experience available, showcasing the plateau’s incredible diversity of landscapes, cultures, and spiritual traditions. From the moment you arrive in Lhasa, you’ll feel the unique energy of the Tibetan plateau — the crisp mountain air, the sound of prayer wheels, the sight of maroon-robed monks, and the unwavering faith of pilgrims. Three days in Lhasa provide the perfect introduction to Tibetan culture while allowing your body to gently acclimatize to the altitude before venturing further.

As you travel east to Nyingchi, the landscape transforms dramatically — from high-altitude plateau to lush green valleys, dense forests, and rushing rivers. The “Switzerland of Tibet” offers a softer, greener side of the plateau, with turquoise lakes, ancient forests, and the majestic Namcha Barwa peak. Returning westward, you’ll experience the classic highlights of central Tibet — Yamdrok Lake’s turquoise waters, the massive ice walls of Karola Glacier, and the towering presence of Mount Everest. Finally, the journey reaches its spiritual climax at Mount Kailash — the holiest mountain in Tibet, where pilgrims from across the Buddhist and Hindu world come to circumambulate the sacred peak. By journey’s end, you will have traversed the entire breadth of the Tibetan plateau and experienced its full spectrum of natural beauty and spiritual power.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Lhasa, Tibet

Altitude: 3,650m | Drive: ~1 hour from airport |

Welcome to Lhasa, the spiritual capital of Tibet! Your personal English-speaking Tibetan guide and driver will meet you at Lhasa Gongkar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station, greeting you with a traditional white Hada scarf — a symbol of purity, welcome, and good fortune in Tibetan culture. From the airport, enjoy a scenic drive along the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley to your hotel in central Lhasa. Along the way, your guide will provide a brief overview of your 14-day itinerary and share essential tips for adjusting to the high altitude.

Your first day is dedicated entirely to gentle acclimatization. At 3,650 meters above sea level, the air contains roughly 65% of the oxygen at sea level, and resting is the best way to help your body adapt. We recommend taking it easy — lie down, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and listen to your body. When you feel ready, a slow stroll around your hotel neighborhood makes for a perfect introduction to Lhasa. As night falls, the illuminated Potala Palace offers a magical first glimpse of Lhasa’s iconic skyline.

Day 2 Lhasa — Drepung Monastery & Sera Monastery

Altitude: 3,650m–3,800m | Meals: Breakfast

Begin your exploration of Lhasa’s monastic heritage with a morning visit to Drepung Monastery — once the largest Buddhist monastery in the world, home to over 10,000 monks at its peak. Founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsongkhapa, this sprawling whitewashed complex climbs the slopes of Mount Gephel like a small city. Explore the grand Coqen Hall, where your guide will explain the worldview of Tibetan Buddhism and introduce the stories of renowned figures in Tibetan Buddhist history. Visit Loseling College and the monks’ dormitories to gain insight into the daily routines and living conditions of Tibetan monastic life.

In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery, one of the “Great Three” Gelug monasteries of Tibet, famous throughout the world for its lively monk debate sessions. Held daily from Monday to Saturday (approximately 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM) in the monastery’s courtyard, these debates are both intellectually rigorous and theatrically vivid. Watch as monks in maroon robes engage in animated philosophical disputation — clapping their hands, stomping their feet, and gesturing dramatically as they challenge each other’s understanding of Buddhist doctrine. Your guide will explain how these debates help monks acquire knowledge and advance in their academic degrees.

After the debates, take time to explore the rest of the monastery, including its sacred chapels and assembly halls, before returning to your hotel for a restful evening.

Overnight: Lhasa

Day 3Lhasa — Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor Street

Altitude: 3,650m–3,763m (Potala summit) | Meals: Breakfast

Today, visit the heart and soul of Lhasa — the magnificent Potala Palace. Perched dramatically on Red Hill, this 13-story architectural masterpiece has served as the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas and the political and spiritual center of Tibet for over 350 years. Climb its stone steps and explore the labyrinthine halls, chapels, and tombs of successive Dalai Lamas — each one adorned with gold, jewels, and sacred relics. Discover the lives and stories of the Dalai Lamas through history, and admire the extraordinary treasures within the palace, including the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of Tibet’s 33rd great king. From the rooftop terrace, savor panoramic views over the entire Lhasa city.

After exploring the Potala Palace, visit Longwangtan Park at its base, where you can appreciate the majestic Potala Palace from a different perspective and observe local Tibetans enjoying traditional folk activities.

In the afternoon, head to the Jokhang Temple — the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside, see the revered 12-year-old statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, considered so lifelike that it resembles seeing the Buddha in person. Outside the temple, watch pilgrims prostrating themselves before the sacred entrance with deep devotion. Around the temple is Barkhor Street, where you can walk the traditional kora (pilgrimage circuit) clockwise with pilgrims and locals, witnessing how Tibetans practice their Buddhist faith in daily life. Afterward you can go to Tibetan tea houses in Lhasa, where you can sip traditional Tibetan sweet tea.

Overnight: Lhasa

Day 4Lhasa to Nyingchi via Basum Tso Lake

Altitude: Lhasa 3,650m → Nyingchi 2,900m | Distance: ~400km | Drive: ~6–7 hours | Meals: Breakfast

Today, set off eastward from Lhasa toward Nyingchi — the lush “Switzerland of Tibet” — along the scenic G318 National Highway. The journey takes you through the beautiful Niyang River valley, with its crystal-clear waters, willow-lined banks, and traditional Tibetan villages.

The highlight of the day is a visit to Basum Tso Lake (3,700m) — a stunning turquoise alpine lake nestled in a valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forests. Known as the “Green Water Lake,” Basum Tso is one of the most beautiful lakes in eastern Tibet and a sacred site of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Walk along the lakeshore, visit the small Tsozong Monastery perched on a tiny island in the lake, and enjoy the peaceful, pristine beauty of this hidden gem. The lake’s emerald-green waters, surrounded by virgin forests and snow peaks, create a picture-perfect scene.

Continue your journey eastward, descending gradually into the Nyingchi valley. As you lose altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly lush and green — a stark contrast to the high plateau you’ve been traveling through. Arrive in Nyingchi (Bayi Town) in the evening and check into your hotel. At just 2,900 meters above sea level, Nyingchi offers a welcome respite from the high altitude, with richer oxygen and milder temperatures.

Overnight: Nyingchi

Day 5Nyingchi — Lulang Forest & Sejila Pass

Altitude: Sejila Pass 4,728m → Lulang 3,400m | Drive: ~150km round trip | Meals: Breakfast

Today, explore the natural wonders of Nyingchi with a day trip to Lulang Forest and Sejila Pass. Drive east from Nyingchi, climbing steadily through forested valleys toward the Sejila Mountain range.

At Sejila Pass (4,728m), you’ll be treated to one of Tibet’s most spectacular mountain views — the majestic Namcha Barwa Peak (7,782m), often called “China’s most beautiful mountain.” On clear days, the snow-capped pyramid of Namcha Barwa rises dramatically above the sea of clouds, its summit piercing the sky. Considered one of the hardest mountains in the world to climb, Namcha Barwa remains unclimbed until 1992 and is deeply revered by local Tibetans as a sacred peak.

Descending from the pass, you’ll enter the enchanting Lulang Forest — a vast expanse of ancient spruce and pine trees, lush alpine meadows, and wooden Tibetan farmhouses. Known as the “Dragon King’s Valley,” Lulang feels like a fairy tale landscape, with grazing yaks, wildflowers, and snow-capped peaks visible through the trees. Stroll through the forest, breathe in the fresh pine-scented air, and enjoy a lunch of local specialties at one of the village restaurants.

On the way back to Nyingchi, stop at the Gala Peach Blossom Village (seasonal) — famous for its ancient peach trees that bloom in a riot of pink each spring. Even outside blossom season, the village offers a charming glimpse into rural Tibetan life in the Nyingchi valley.

Overnight: Nyingchi

Day 6Nyingchi to Lhasa — Return via Yarlung Tsangpo Valley

Altitude: Nyingchi 2,900m → Lhasa 3,650m | Distance: ~400km | Drive: ~6–7 hours

After breakfast, bid farewell to the green valleys of Nyingchi and begin your return journey to Lhasa. The drive back follows the same scenic route along the Niyang River valley, but the return journey offers new perspectives — the light is different, the weather may have changed, and you’ll notice details you missed on the way in.

Along the way, make stops at scenic viewpoints and traditional Tibetan villages. Visit a Tibetan family home in one of the valley villages to experience rural Tibetan life firsthand — taste butter tea and barley wine, learn about traditional farming practices, and see how families live in this beautiful but challenging environment.

As you climb back toward the high plateau, the landscape gradually shifts from green forest to more open, arid terrain — a reminder that you’re returning to the roof of the world. Arrive back in Lhasa in the late afternoon. Use the evening to rest, relax, and prepare for the next phase of your journey — the westward adventure toward Everest and Kailash.

Overnight: Lhasa

Day 7Lhasa to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake & Gyantse

Altitude:  Shigatse 3,836m | Distance: ~360km | Drive: ~6.5 hours

Today begins your westward journey toward the Himalayas. After breakfast, set off from Lhasa and drive over the Gampala Pass (4,790m) for your first breathtaking view of Yamdrok Lake — one of the three holiest lakes in Tibet. From the pass, the lake unfolds below like a brilliant blue ribbon winding through the mountains, with the towering Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar (7,191m) visible in the distance. Continue to explore the lakeshore from various viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on this natural masterpiece.

Next, pass the dramatic Karola Glacier (5,100m) right beside the highway. This massive glacier tumbles down the entire hillside, its blue-white ice walls creating a stunning contrast against the dark rock. Stop at the viewpoint to marvel at the glacier and capture photos.

Continuing your journey toward Gyantse, stop at Simila Mountain Pass, where you can hang prayer flags to pray for world peace and the health of your loved ones — a meaningful Tibetan tradition. Upon arriving in Gyantse, take time to photograph the ancient city and Gyangtse Dzong,  Finally, arrive in Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. Check into your hotel and rest well in preparation for tomorrow’s journey to Mount Everest.

Overnight: Shigatse

Day 8Shigatse to Everest Base Camp

Altitude: EBC 5,200m | Distance: ~350km | Drive: ~7–8 hours | Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, set off directly for Mount Everest — the highlight of this leg of your journey. The first major stop is Gyatsola Pass (5,280m), where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest. Hidden behind the mountain range, Everest resembles a budding lotus flower — a captivating sight along the roadside.

Shortly after entering Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, you’ll enjoy the panoramic view of the Himalayas at Gawula Pass (5,198m). At this viewpoint, marvel at the majestic lineup of the five highest peaks in the Himalayas, all towering above 8,000 meters — with Everest standing proudly at the forefront.

As day transitions to dusk, witness the golden hues of the sun casting a warm glow on Everest’s northern face. As night descends, the glistening Milky Way alongside the snow-white peak of Mount Everest offers a truly unforgettable sight. Stay overnight at Everest Base Camp in a tent guesthouse

Note: Mild headaches and difficulty sleeping at EBC are common due to altitude. This is normal — take it slow, stay hydrated, and savor the beauty.

Day 9:Everest Base Camp to Saga

Altitude: Saga 4,487m | Distance: ~380km | Drive: ~7–8 hours |

Wake early to witness the graceful sunrise over Mount Everest — a breathtaking spectacle as the first rays of light paint the peak in shades of pink and gold. Before departing from the base camp, visit Rongbuk Monastery — the highest monastery in the world at 5,154 meters above sea level. This Tibetan Nyingma monastery sits in close proximity to Mount Everest and is a place where nuns and monks reside together. The views of Everest from the monastery grounds are among the finest anywhere.

Then, begin your journey westward toward Saga, the gateway to western Tibet and the Mount Kailash region. The drive takes you across the vast, windswept plains of southern Tibet, with the Himalayan range visible to the south. Along the way, pass by Mount Shishapangma (8,027 meters) — one of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, and the only one entirely within China. Enjoy a close view of the three main peaks of Shishapangma, as well as the serene beauty of Pelku Tso Lake (4,590m) beneath the peaks — a sapphire lake cradled by rugged mountains.

Continue westward across the expansive Tibetan plateau, passing nomad camps, wild ass, and gazelle. The landscape grows increasingly vast and remote as you leave the more populated regions of central Tibet behind. Arrive in Saga in the evening — a small frontier town that serves as the last major stop before the sacred lands of western Tibet. Check into your hotel and rest well in preparation for the journey ahead.

Overnight: Saga

Day 10Saga to Darchen via Lake Manasarovar

Altitude: Darchen 4,600m | Distance: ~490km | Drive: ~8–9 hours | Meals: Breakfast

Today, journey deeper into western Tibet toward the sacred Mount Kailash region. The drive takes you across the vast plains of western Tibet, with the Gangdise mountain range rising to the north and the Himalayas to the south. Cross the Mayumla Pass (5,112m), where you can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Naimonanyi (7,694m) — the highest peak in the Ngari region.

In the afternoon, arrive at the holy Lake Manasarovar (4,588m) — the “Queen of Holy Lakes” and one of the most sacred bodies of water in the world. Revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bönpos alike, Manasarovar is believed to be the source of four great rivers of Asia: the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Sutlej. Walk along the shore, breathe in the pure mountain air, and absorb the profound spiritual energy of this extraordinary place. The lake’s deep blue waters perfectly reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty and serenity.

Continue to Darchen (4,600m) — the starting point for the Mount Kailash Kora. Located at the southern foot of Mount Kailash, Darchen is a small but growing town that serves as the base for pilgrims and trekkers. Check into your guesthouse and rest, as tomorrow begins the sacred three-day circumambulation of Mount Kailash. Your guide will provide a detailed trek briefing this evening.

Overnight: Darchen

Day 11Darchen – Zanda | Mount Kailash & Tholing Monastery

Driving distance: Approx. 230 km | Drive: ~4 hours

Continue your journey into the ancient kingdom of western Tibet, traveling through the remote landscapes of the Ngari region. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kailash, one of Tibet’s most sacred mountains, before continuing toward Zanda.

Visit Tholing Monastery, one of the oldest and most historically significant monasteries in western Tibet. Famous for its ancient Buddhist murals, sculptures, and distinctive architectural style, Tholing offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich religious and cultural heritage.

Day 12Zanda – Shiquanhe | Guge Kingdom Ruins

Driving distance: Approx. 251 km | Drive: ~4.5 hours

Today, explore the mysterious Guge Kingdom Ruins, one of western Tibet’s most remarkable archaeological treasures. Perched dramatically above the Zanda landscape, the ruins preserve ancient palaces, temples, caves, defensive structures, and centuries-old Buddhist murals, offering a fascinating glimpse into a powerful kingdom that flourished from around the 10th century before declining in the 17th century.

After exploring Guge, continue through the spectacular landscapes of Zanda County toward Shiquanhe (Ali), the administrative center of Ngari Prefecture. The journey takes you from the remote ruins and dramatic Zanda Earth Forest into the vast high-altitude wilderness of western Tibet. Upon arrival in Shiquanhe, check into your hotel and rest after the long journey.

Overnight: Shiquanhe (Ali)

Day 13Shiquanhe – Lhasa Flight

Transfer from Ali Kunsha Airport (Ngari Gunsa, NGQ) back to Lhasa Gonggar (LXA) on Tibet Airlines flights that typically depart mid-morning around 10:00–11:00 and arrive around midday after about two hours; these high-plateau services are prone to weather delays or cancellations due to wind and visibility issues, so build in one full extra buffer day.

On arrival in Lhasa, head out that afternoon to Samye Monastery (roughly 1–2 hours by private vehicle), the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet with its distinctive mandala layout, which is open until about 16:00 and needs 2–3 hours for a solid visit—keep the schedule flexible so any flight disruption doesn’t cascade.
