This 10-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp and Namtso Lake tour is designed for travelers who want to experience the cultural heart of Tibet, the dramatic Himalayan landscape around Mount Everest, and the vast wilderness of the Northern Tibetan Plateau in one journey. Rather than simply following the popular Lhasa–Everest route and returning the same way, this itinerary creates a spectacular loop through central Tibet, the Everest region, the remote northern grasslands, and the sacred waters of Namtso.
The journey begins in Lhasa, where you have two days to acclimatize while discovering the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery. You then travel west through Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier and Gyantse before reaching Shigatse and continuing toward Everest Base Camp. After experiencing the north face of Mount Everest and visiting Rongbuk Monastery, the route turns east and north through the immense grasslands of the Qiangtang Plateau, passing the spectacular Serling Tso Lake before reaching the holy Namtso Lake. This combination of culture, Himalayan scenery, high-altitude lakes, wildlife, nomadic landscapes, and Tibetan spirituality makes it one of the most comprehensive 10-day Tibet tours.
This is much more than an Everest Base Camp excursion. The first part of the journey introduces you to Tibetan Buddhist culture and history, while the second half takes you deep into some of the least-developed and most spectacular landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau. In Lhasa, you will see ancient monasteries, pilgrims performing kora, monks debating Buddhist philosophy and traditional Tibetan neighborhoods. On the road to Everest, the landscape changes dramatically from fertile valleys and turquoise lakes to snow-covered mountains and high Himalayan passes.
After Everest, the journey becomes increasingly wild. The road crosses the huge northern Tibetan grasslands where the horizon seems endless and settlements become increasingly sparse. Serling Tso, one of Northern Tibet’s great high-altitude lakes, provides an extraordinary stop before you continue toward Namtso. At Namtso, turquoise-blue water, open grasslands and the snow-covered Nyenchen Tanglha range create one of the most memorable landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau.
Altitude: Lhasa – 3,650 m
Your Tibet adventure begins with your arrival in Lhasa, either by flight or the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. Your Tibetan guide and driver will meet you at the airport or railway station and transfer you to your hotel, with the journey offering beautiful views of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Lhasa Valley. After checking in, the rest of the day is free for you to relax and settle into the high-altitude environment.
There is no scheduled sightseeing today, allowing your body time to acclimatize to Lhasa’s altitude of 3,650 meters. Take it easy, drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity, and enjoy a restful first day in Tibet.

After breakfast, begin your first full day in Lhasa with a visit to Drepung Monastery, one of Tibet’s largest and most historically important monasteries. Explore its grand assembly halls, courtyards, chapels, and traditional Tibetan architecture while your guide introduces you to the monastery’s history and its role in Tibetan Buddhism.
In the afternoon, continue to Sera Monastery, another important Gelug monastery famous for its lively monk debates. Watch monks engage in energetic philosophical discussions, using animated gestures and rapid exchanges as they challenge and respond to one another. Return to Lhasa in the evening and enjoy a relaxing dinner after a day of cultural exploration.

Today focuses on the spiritual and historical heart of Lhasa, beginning with a visit to the magnificent Potala Palace. Perched high above the city, this iconic landmark was historically the principal residence of the Dalai Lamas. Explore its grand halls, chapels, murals, statues, stupas, manuscripts, and remarkable collection of Buddhist art while learning about its significance in Tibetan history and and culture.
After visiting the Potala Palace, continue to Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Lhasa and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Tibet. The temple attracts pilgrims from across the Tibetan plateau, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. From Jokhang Temple, walk through Barkhor Street, where pilgrims perform the traditional clockwise kora around the temple.
Barkhor is also a wonderful place to experience everyday life in Lhasa, with its traditional Tibetan architecture, handicraft shops, local restaurants, and lively streets. If time permits, stop at a traditional Tibetan teahouse to relax and sample Tibetan sweet tea.
Overnight: Lhasa | Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, leave Lhasa and begin your scenic overland journey toward Shigatse, traveling through some of southern Tibet’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. Your first major stop is Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s most revered sacred lakes. From the high mountain passes, its turquoise waters stretch across the valleys like a giant blue ribbon, surrounded by rugged mountains and snow-covered peaks.
Continue toward the Karola Glacier, one of the most accessible glaciers along this route. Rising dramatically above the road, the glacier creates a striking contrast against the surrounding brown and golden mountains. Take time to enjoy the scenery and capture photographs before continuing to Gyantse, a historic Tibetan town known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional architecture, and fertile agricultural landscapes.
From Gyantse, continue your journey toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and an important center of Tibetan culture and Buddhism. Along the way, the road passes through peaceful villages, cultivated fields, and traditional Tibetan farming areas, offering a glimpse into everyday life on the Tibetan Plateau. Upon arrival in Shigatse, check into your hotel and relax for the evening.
Altitude: Everest Base Camp – approximately 5,200 m
Today is one of the most anticipated days of your Tibet journey as you leave Shigatse and travel toward the Everest region. After breakfast, begin the scenic drive into the high Himalayas. As the road climbs higher, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic, with vast valleys, barren mountain slopes, and snow-covered peaks appearing along the way.
One of the major highlights is Gawula Pass, at approximately 5,200 meters above sea level. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy a spectacular panorama of the Himalayan range. On clear days, the distant peaks of several of the world’s highest mountains can be seen stretching across the horizon, creating an unforgettable mountain vista.
Continue through Mount Everest National Nature Reserve along winding mountain roads toward Everest Base Camp. As you approach the base camp, Mount Everest gradually dominates the skyline, rising majestically above the surrounding peaks. Reaching the Tibetan side of Everest Base Camp offers a remarkable opportunity to stand beneath the world’s highest mountain and experience the extraordinary scale of the Himalayas.
Spend the evening taking in the breathtaking views of Everest as the changing sunlight transforms the mountain at sunset. If weather conditions are favorable, the high-altitude night sky can reveal an incredible display of stars and the Milky Way.
Overnight: Everest Base Camp tent/guesthouse | Meals: Breakfast.
Important: Everest Base Camp is at very high altitude, so headaches, reduced appetite, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping can occur. Follow your guide’s instructions, avoid unnecessary exertion, and use supplemental oxygen if required.
Wake early, weather permitting, to experience the spectacular sunrise over Mount Everest, when the first light of day gradually illuminates the mountain’s snow-covered summit. After breakfast, visit Rongbuk Monastery, located near the northern face of Everest. Set against an extraordinary Himalayan backdrop, the monastery is one of the highest and most remarkable religious sites in Tibet, offering magnificent views of the surrounding peaks.
Begin the return journey toward Shigatse, following an alternative Himalayan route when road and weather conditions permit. Along the way, stop at scenic viewpoints around Dinggye for further views of Everest and the surrounding mountain ranges. The changing landscapes, high mountain passes, and remote valleys make this a memorable part of the journey.
You may also pass through the historic Sakya area, traditionally associated with the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism, before continuing to Shigatse. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved evening of rest after your journey through the Everest region.
Overnight: Shigatse.
Driving distance: approximately 550 km
Today, the character of the journey changes completely as you leave Shigatse and travel toward the vast Northern Tibetan Grasslands, entering the remote landscapes of the Qiangtang Plateau. Although this is a long driving day, the spectacular scenery makes the journey worthwhile, with endless open grasslands, distant mountains, and wide horizons stretching across the high plateau.
Along the route, you may see herds of yaks and sheep grazing across the grasslands, while lucky travelers may also spot Tibetan antelope and other wildlife adapted to the harsh high-altitude environment. The highlight of the day is Serling Tso, one of Northern Tibet’s largest and most spectacular lakes. Its vast blue waters stretch across the plateau, creating an almost ocean-like landscape surrounded by rugged mountains.
Continue onward to Bange County, a remote settlement on the Northern Tibetan Plateau, where you will stop for the night. After the long journey, enjoy a relaxing evening and prepare for another day of exploration across Tibet’s extraordinary high-altitude landscapes.
Overnight: Bangon | Meals: Breakfast.
Altitude: Namtso – approximately 4,700 m
Continue your journey across the vast Northern Tibetan Grasslands toward the spectacular Namtso Lake. Along the way, the landscape unfolds into endless high-altitude grasslands, snow-covered mountains, and remote nomadic settlements. Herds of yaks and sheep can often be seen grazing across the open plateau, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Tibet’s pastoral communities. Depending on the route and local conditions, you may also pass Bam Tso Lake, another beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
As the journey continues, the deep blue waters of Namtso gradually appear on the horizon. One of Tibet’s most revered sacred lakes, Namtso is framed by the magnificent Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, creating one of the most impressive landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau. The combination of turquoise-blue water, snow-capped peaks, and vast open skies makes this one of the highlights of the journey.
Spend time around Tashi Dor Island and along the lakeshore, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and photographing the spectacular scenery. Colorful prayer flags flutter in the strong mountain wind, while the enormous lake stretches toward the horizon, seemingly merging with the sky. Later, continue toward Damxung for your overnight stay.
Overnight: Damxung | Meals: Breakfast.
Driving distance: approximately 160 km
After breakfast, leave Damxung and begin the final drive toward Lhasa. The landscape gradually changes from the vast, open northern plateau to the greener and more developed surroundings of the Lhasa Valley. Depending on the route and local travel conditions, there may be opportunities to stop at scenic viewpoints or local cultural sites along the way.
The journey to Lhasa is considerably shorter than the previous day’s long drive, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed pace. As you approach the city, take in the changing scenery and the views of the surrounding mountains and valleys before arriving in Lhasa.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure. You may spend your final evening shopping for Tibetan handicrafts, exploring Barkhor Street once more, enjoying a local meal, or simply relaxing after your journey across Tibet.
