The Sichuan-Tibet Railway is one of the most ambitious railway projects in China. It is also one of the most challenging high-altitude railways under construction anywhere in the world. Once completed, it will connect Chengdu in Sichuan with Lhasa in Tibet. This will create a major railway corridor between the Chengdu–Chongqing economic region and the Tibetan Plateau.

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway, known as the Lalin Railway, opened on June 25, 2021. It is Tibet’s first electrified railway and has a total length of about 435.48 kilometers. The line has a design speed of 160 km/h, with more than 90% of the route located above 3,000 meters in elevation.
The most challenging section is the Ya’an-Nyingchi Railway, which is approximately 1,011 kilometers long. It runs through western Sichuan and southeastern Tibet, passing areas including Kangding, Yajiang, Batang, Qamdo, Bomi and Nyingchi before connecting with the existing Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway. Official project documents list an estimated investment of about RMB 319.8 billion and a design speed ranging from 120 to 200 km/h.
Latest Construction Progress in 2026
The Ya’an–Nyingchi section is now in a major construction phase. Numerous tunnels, bridges, stations and associated infrastructure are being developed simultaneously along the route.

Other major tunnels include the Zheduo Mountain Tunnel, Duomuge Tunnel, Zila Mountain Tunnel, Mila Mountain Tunnel, Yela Mountain Tunnel and Haizishan Tunnel. Earlier project information shows the extraordinary concentration of long tunnels required to cross the mountainous terrain. The scale of these projects explains why the Ya’an–Nyingchi section requires a much longer construction period than conventional railway projects.
Why Is the Sichuan-Tibet Railway So Difficult to Build?
The railway crosses some of the most complicated terrain in Asia. From Sichuan to Tibet, the route repeatedly climbs and descends across major mountain ranges and river valleys.
1. Extreme geological conditions
The railway passes through regions affected by active geological processes, including earthquakes, landslides, rock deformation, rock bursts, high ground temperatures, water inflows and mud surges. The railway therefore requires extensive tunnels and bridges rather than conventional surface construction.
Official project documents show that the Ya’an–Nyingchi section has a very high proportion of bridge and tunnel works. Its route crosses major mountain systems and river valleys, creating an engineering environment sometimes described as a “geological museum.”

4. Landslides, mudslides and extreme weather
The southeastern Tibetan Plateau receives substantially more precipitation than many other parts of Tibet. Railway bridges, tunnels and slopes therefore require extensive monitoring and protective engineering.
5. Environmental protection
The railway passes through areas with highly sensitive mountain, forest and alpine ecosystems. Environmental protection is therefore an important part of construction. Supporting roads, construction sites, bridges and tunnels must be carefully managed to reduce damage to vegetation, waterways and wildlife habitats. When Will the Sichuan-Tibet Railway Open?
There is considerable speculation online about an exact opening date for a direct Chengdu–Lhasa train. However, travelers should distinguish between project targets and officially confirmed operating dates.
The Ya’an–Nyingchi section is being constructed in stages, and some individual sections may progress faster than others. Railway authorities will not consider the final full-line passenger operation date for the Sichuan-Tibet Railway confirmed until they issue an official announcement.
For travelers planning Tibet trips today, the existing options remain air travel, the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, and road routes. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway should be viewed as a future transportation corridor rather than an available Chengdu–Lhasa train route.
How the Sichuan-Tibet Railway Could Transform Tibet’s Economy
The significance of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway goes far beyond passenger travel. Once completed, it could substantially improve logistics, tourism and economic connections between Tibet and southwestern China.
Lower Logistics Costs
Rail transport can move large volumes of goods more efficiently than long-distance road transportation. The railway could bring construction materials, machinery, food, consumer goods and industrial supplies into Tibet while providing a more efficient channel for transporting Tibetan products to markets outside the region.
This could be particularly important for products such as yak meat, highland barley, Tibetan medicine, mineral water and other specialty agricultural products. Existing railway operations already demonstrate this potential. The Lalin Railway carried more than 2 million tonnes of cargo during the five years after its opening. In 2026, its average daily freight volume was reported to be 35.7 times higher than during its initial operating period.
A Major Tourism Corridor
The Sichuan–Tibet Railway could also become a major tourism route connecting Chengdu, western Sichuan, Qamdo, Bomi, Nyingchi and Lhasa. Travelers would gain easier access to destinations such as the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, Nyingchi, Mount Namcha Barwa, Bomi and Ranwu Lake.

The railway could support the development of cold-chain logistics, agricultural processing, e-commerce and regional distribution centers. It may also make it easier to transport equipment and technical resources required by clean-energy and other industries.
However, railway access alone will not automatically create economic growth. Local industries still require investment, skilled workers, market access and effective environmental management.
A New Economic and Transportation Link for Tibet
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will complement the existing Qinghai–Tibet Railway, Lhasa–Shigatse Railway and Lhasa–Nyingchi Railway, gradually expanding Tibet’s railway network. As of 2026, the Qinghai–Tibet, Lhasa–Shigatse and Lhasa–Nyingchi lines form the main Y-shaped railway network serving Lhasa, Shigatse, Shannan, Nyingchi and Nagqu. The Future of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway

Its economic benefits are likely to emerge gradually rather than immediately. The railway could reduce logistics barriers, expand tourism, support local specialty industries and create new employment opportunities. At the same time, the region’s fragile environment and limited population density mean that development will need to remain carefully managed.
The experience of the Lalin Railway already shows how improved rail access can influence travel, logistics, tourism and local industries. For Tibet, the eventual completion of the Sichuan–Tibet Railway could mark another major step in building a modern regional transportation network.
