What to Expect

During this 6-day Lhasa Shigatse tour, travelers can expect a carefully paced journey that blends cultural sightseeing with scenic overland travel. The first part of the tour focuses on Lhasa, where you will visit some of Tibet’s most important religious and historical sites before heading west through dramatic mountain roads, turquoise lakes, and traditional Tibetan towns.

You should also expect comfortable but high-altitude travel, meaning that rest, hydration, and a moderate pace are important throughout the trip. As the journey continues to Shigatse, the landscapes become increasingly vast and impressive, offering some of the best road-trip views in Tibet. The tour is ideal for travelers who want both cultural depth and unforgettable plateau scenery.

  • Panoramic views of Yamdrok Lake.
  • Ancient Tibetan heritage in Gyantse.
  • A meaningful visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse.
  • Scenic drives across the Tibetan plateau.
Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Lhasa

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will meet you at the airport or railway station and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is kept free for rest and acclimatization, which is important at Lhasa’s high altitude of about 3,650 meters. Take it easy, drink plenty of water, and allow your body to adjust before sightseeing begins.

Day 2 Lhasa Sightseeing

Start your exploration of Lhasa with a visit to the Potala Palace, the city’s most iconic landmark and former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. Continue to Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s most sacred temple, and then walk through Barkhor Street, where pilgrims, prayer wheels, and local life create an unforgettable spiritual atmosphere.

Day 3Lhasa City Tour

Continue your Lhasa cultural exploration with more time for the city’s monastery circuit and local experiences. Some versions of the tour place Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery across Days 2 and 3 to allow a more relaxed pace and better acclimatization.

This day is a great opportunity to enjoy the spiritual character of the city at a slower pace. You may also have time for local tea houses, traditional streets, or short walks around the old town, depending on the final itinerary structure and your arrival time in Lhasa.

Day 4Lhasa to Shigatse via Gyantse

After breakfast, depart Lhasa and drive over the scenic route to Shigatse via Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular views of the turquoise lake, snow-covered peaks, and the wide Tibetan plateau, making this one of the most scenic drives in Central Tibet.

Day 5Shigatse Sightseeing

Today, explore Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and one of the most important monasteries in Tibet. The monastery is known for its grand halls, spiritual atmosphere, and the giant Maitreya statue, making it a highlight of any Shigatse visit.

Day 6Return to Lhasa and Departure

On the final day, drive back to Lhasa along the scenic route, enjoying one last look at Tibet’s beautiful plateau landscapes. The journey gives you another chance to admire the rivers, mountain passes, and open countryside that define Central Tibet.

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will transfer you to the airport or railway station for your departure. If time allows, you may also have a final chance to shop for souvenirs or take a short walk in the old city before ending your Tibet journey.
